CREATIVE DIRECTOR • NARRATIVE DESIGNER
FAIRY QUEEN
WRITER & DIRECTOR
In this commission, I was asked to create a new production of Purcell’s Fairy Queen. To create something fresh which still felt in keeping with the tone and character-world of the original, I created new narrative material from the folklore origins of the original text (Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream). This refocused the piece on the relationship between man and nature, forming an exploration into the folk traditions that we have now lost. Weaving together layers of masque, ritual, and storytelling, this project made an enchanting event which combined the music of Purcell with the natural magic of outdoor theatre-making.
